Modern Fire Pits

Modern Fire Pits

There is nothing that quite ties a backyard together like a beautiful modern fire pit. Fire pits are one of the best places for treasured family gatherings, bustling house parties, and coveted evening relaxation. Modern outdoor fire pits come in a wide variety of styles made from many different materials. Each material and design has its own aesthetic and practical advantages. In this intro, we will give you some of the best features and materials to look for when considering purchasing a new fire pit. With our guide, you will be on your way to selecting a fire pit that perfectly suits your tastes and needs.

Types of Modern Outdoor Fire Pits and Fuels

Modern fire pits are made from a spectrum of durable materials and use different fuel types. Some of these attractive materials can include concrete, stone, steel, and copper, which all have their own unique qualities to consider for your particular installation and environment. However, you may want to start by choosing between traditional wood or gas burning fire pits. Both your fuel and material choice will have a major impact to the look, feel, and experience.

The Fuels

Do you like that irreplaceable experience of an actual wood burning fire? Moving the coals, adding wood, seeing the embers rise? Or do you respond more to the convenience of gas? Turn on, light, and see the flames rise through the media? Either way, luckily you can find examples of fire pits of most materials that can accommodate either. Also, exploring what fuel type you have access to may inform you as well.

There are 2 main types of gas options which are natural gas and propane gas. Natural gas is usually supplied to urban and suburban area homes that can be tapped into for a permanent install. Propane gas is usually used in portable situations or remote rural areas where municipal natural gas is not provided, and usually a small tank is visible, limited, and near the install. Make sure you identify which you have or want to use first as some parts needed for each type gas is different! Also, either of these need some sort of ignition solution and media such as lava rock or glass to rise through and cover the element.

The simplest choice, of course, is using wood for your fuel. Wood burning fire pits do not need any additional parts or infrastructure, which usually makes this option the most cost effective and dependable. Fire wood is readily available and affordable in almost all areas and it’s very hard to replicate the warmth, color, and presence of a natural wood burning flame.

The Materials

Concrete, stone, and other masonry fire pits are usually built-in-place custom installations that use either traditional wood or gas as their fuel type. This can give extreme matching capability, especially if your house is of the same masonry you choose, but be aware of with its robustness comes permanence.

Metals such as steel and even copper make up a large portion of offerings and sometimes mix and match other materials into the product which you may or may not want. Fewer components usually mean more durability, but also pay attention to the thickness of these metals. If you want it to last generations, make sure its thick and heavy to combat the wear of the elements.
