Mabry Beach House
This customizable prefab beach house concept was conceived following the devastation that Hurricane Ike imposed on Texas’s Bolivar Peninsula. 99.5% of structures in Gilchrist, Texas disappeared. A more resistant and economical solution was explored. ISBUs, or shipping containers, were chosen as the exterior shell for their rugged contiguous construction, economics of prefabrication, and vernacular of coastal industry. The program is implemented within an arrangement of ISBUs in 1, 2, 3, or 4 unit organizations. This prototype, slated for construction in early 2011, is in the 3 unit configuration. The offset and stacked composition creates spaces for entry, outdoor decks, and beautiful views. We will soon offer all 4 configurations as a creative solution to coastal living. Benetton
The Benetton mixed used project is located in the metropolis that is Tehran Iran. The programmatic requirements where a total of 12 floors of which 2 of the above ground floors would be dedicated to commercial use, 5 dedicated to office space and 1 for residential use plus 4 underground floors for parking. Our concept is a biomimicry of the pomegranate. By studying its models, systems, processes and elements we take creative inspiration to solve this architectural challenge, sustainably. The skin is translated into a screen. Proving protection against direct sun light, and allows for maximum day lighting. In a typical office building most of the heat is gained through synthetic lighting and direct sunlight. Our design approach would take advantage of daylight harvesting by minimizing direct heat gain and maximizing day lighting. By allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the space, we reduce the amount of synthetic lighting required and also reduce cooling costs and energy usage. The pulp provides the connection between the inside and outside, it is the mass and is represented with stacked program space. The stacked floor plates both embody space and create void space. Like the pulp in a pomegranate the mass act as an in-between space nestled within the skin and the seeds. The Seed are the jewels that ever seemingly peak out and revile themselves. The seeds are the only elements that expose themselves beyond the protective skin. These distinctly sensory spaces are designated for public programs such as conference rooms and display windows. -
LACMA
This study was a counter proposal to the competition entries for LACMA made by Koolhaas, Libeskind, Holl, Mayne and Nouvel. Each of these architects' proposals represents a vision about architecture, especially in relation to the role and function of the Museum within the context of the contemporary cultural condition. Our proposal was to investigate the role of the museum as a memetic parasite for the twenty-first century. We incorporated the programmatic requirements with Knot Topology to create our structure. The structure is composed of a series of programmatic spaces that grow and feed off each other create a living organism that is the museum.
